7 Easy Fun Games For Children During Road Trips

What do parents dread most about family road trips? It’s their own little children stuck together in a tight area for hours. The back seat whining, the poking, and the impatient cries of “Are we there yet”, JUST MAKE IT STOP!

Luckily, there are a lot of ways to keep kids happily entertained and enjoying each other’s company.

The best part is when you achieve this without spending a penny!

Here are 7 best FREE car games for kids!

I Spy

“I spy with my little eye, something red.” This is an easy game to learn for children! It can keep your little preschoolers entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are easy: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess what the item might be!

I’m Going on a Picnic.

This alphabet-based memory game is great for kids 5 and up. You don’t need a game board or any materials. The game can be played with as few as two players, but it’s more fun when the whole family joins in. The first player says “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing…” followed by something that begins with A, such as apples. The second player repeats what the first person said, but adds something that begins with B. So she might say “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples and bananas.” And so on with C, D, and the rest of the alphabet. If someone forgets an item, she is out. To be fair, feel free to be lenient and give hints to younger players. The last player to be able to recite all the items on the list wins.

Road Trip Bingo

This game combines bingo & a scavenger hunt. Give each person a flat surface such as a hard book cover, or even some clipboards to put on their laps. Each other gets a printable bingo card (they are usually online) and a zip-lock bag with 16 pennies. When a person spies an item on his card, she covers the picture with a penny! Just like in regular bingo, the first person to cover all the squares in a straight line wins the game!

Tic Tac Toe

This game consists of two players and a pencil to play. The first player places an X on the grid, and player two puts an O. They continue to take turns until one player has three across. Hand your children several copies of the Tic Tac Toe templates from online, or you can make your own!

License Plate Game

You need a piece of paper and a pen/marker/pencil to write down the name of each state as each person spots it on a license plate. The goal is to get all 50 states! You can often find these printables online too!

Spot The Car

This game is usually for a few older children that know their cars. It is similar to the license plate game, instead of looking for the states, you are looking for different car models. You can find this printable online or make your own.

Connect the Dots

You can find this online to print, or you can make your own. This game works best if you have two players with different colored crayons/markers and each person draws a link. The goal is to make as many boxes as possible with your colored crayon/marker.
